If Dr. Luu were to ask you what a filling is, would you be able to tell him what it is? Many patients can and they instantly refer to the silver fillings, but the dental world has changed quite a bit and there are now more options when it comes to fillings. Whether or not you have healthy teeth or you suffer from tooth decay and cavities, you may need a filling at some point in time. If you do need a filling, you should take a look at the different options and how they can affect you and improve the look of your smile. Dr. Luu does use fillings to protect your teeth should there be a need for them. Cavities will need to be removed and a filling placed within them to prevent tooth loss or infection.

There are different types of fillings that are available for you to choose from and the type you receive will depend on what Dr. Luu recommends for you. Every type of filling has different pros and cons to them. Dr. Luu will work closely with you to make sure that you choose the best option for your mouth. At Fairview Dental, we offer two main types of fillings for you to choose from and they include amalgam and resin or composite.

Amalgam fillings used to be used in every application for fillings previously. These are silver in color and one of the most popular. Amalgam fillings have been at the center of controversy because many patients believe that you may receive too much mercury from them. While it may have been a concern before, technology has advanced and it is not as concerning as it once was. In fact, the ADA does not recommend that amalgam fillings are not in use.

Amalgam fillings will sometimes need to be replaced, especially if they were put into your mouth a long time ago. Older versions may present a risk, but newer versions do not. Some of the disadvantages of older amalgam fillings in your mouth include:

• Corrosion
• Weakened tooth structure
• Temperature sensitivity
• Mercury
• Unappealing appearance
• Can stain your teeth

If you do not want amalgam fillings in your mouth, Dr. Luu will work with you to replace them. You can have the replaced with any other type of filling that is available.

The second option we offer in our office is composite fillings and these can be matched to the color of your teeth. There are many different advantages to choosing this option and many of our patients prefer this option to others. Some of the reasons why you may want to choose a composite filling is because:

• Looks natural within your mouth
• Resistant to cracks and breaks
• Will not stain your teeth
• Does not corrode
• Preserves the integrity of your tooth

Reasons You May Need to Have a Filling

You may have been told that you need a filling and you may wonder why or what other conditions would mean that you need a filling. Below, we will go over some of the reasons why someone would need to have a resin or amalgam filling placed in their mouth.

/ 1. Cosmetic Restoration

Sometimes your teeth do not look the way you want them to. Dr. Luu offers cosmetic restorations here in our Brentwood office and you can take advantage of them. Whether you have tooth decay, a fracture, or severe staining, Dr. Luu can return your smile back to its original state. You will be proud to show off your teeth once again.

Cosmetic restorations come in many different forms and a filling can be part of the process and part of your treatment plan. If you would like to discuss cosmetic restorations, call our office now.

/ 2. Cavities

Cavities are the number one reason why patients will need to receive a filling. The filling itself will help stop the decay and prevent it from spreading to other nearby teeth. Everyone’s mouths have bacteria in them and the bacteria can be quite damaging. When you eat sugar or when you have acidic foods, your teeth will be exposed to the negative effects of it and you may experience tooth decay.

The moment that you start to experience tooth decay, you may notice a small white line, streak, or spot on your tooth. The area will be white because the minerals are being taken away from the tooth. This is the first sign of tooth decay and can be reversed.

To reverse the decay, you will need to re-mineralize the tooth. You should also come into our Brentwood office for a dental cleaning and checkup. If a cavity does form on your tooth, there is no way to actually remove it. You will not be able to reverse the damage that has been done either. Cavities in their earliest stages do not cause much pain or sensitivity, if any. A sensitive or painful tooth means that the decay has advanced and a root canal may be needed.

A filling in our Brentwood office will take anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes depending on the severity of it. You will receive a local anesthetic for pain.

/ 3. Exposed Root

If you have an exposed root, you may need to have a filling to fix the damage done. Overbrushing your teeth may seem like a positive thing to do, but it will actually hinder the health of your teeth and can expose the root. If you do have an exposed root, you should have it looked at immediately because you do not want it to be caused from gum disease and in some cases, it is.
